Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and is located just off the Queensland coast.

A day trip to Fraser Island is absolutely worth it! You can do so much on the island in just one day. Experience incredible landscapes and explore everything the island has to offer. From walking along the beaches and swimming in the lakes to 4WD-ing on the sand.

75 Mile Beach

75 Mile Beach is one of the most popular attractions on Fraser Island. I’m sure you can guess already that the beach is 75 miles which is roughly 120 kilometres. Most people relax on the beach and watch the waves come in. This is where you’ll see a lot of people 4WD-ing along the beach. 75 Mile Beach has been previously voted as one of the best coastal drives in the world.

Lake McKenzie

The water in Lake McKenzie is pure rainwater. The lake does not contain any other water. How impressive is that! The water is crystal clear and beautiful to swim in. The sand is soft as you walk through the water. Many visitors enjoy a picnic and use the BBQ facility near the lake. After a tasty meal, you can relax in the lake and soak up the sun.

Maheno Shipwreck

The Maheno Shipwreck is another popular spot on the island. The SS Maheno was built in 1905 and used as a regular route between Sydney and Auckland. During World War I, the ship became a hospital ship in Europe. The ship was also used in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Then in 1935, Japan bought the SS Maheno. As the ship was being taken to Japan, a storm happened and broke the chain to the ship. The SS Maheno drifted off and eventually landed on Fraser Islands’ beach.

Indian Head

Indian Head is made from volcanic rock from millions of years ago. Indian Head is also the best place to see Fraser Island. You’ll be able to view the turquoise waters and the white beaches. It’s also a great place to check out the wildlife. You might be able to spot fish, turtles, sharks, and whales. The best time to view humpback whales is between August to October.

Champagne Pools

Champagne Pools are naturally formed rock pools. The pools are shallow with a sandy bottom. You can find them on the edge of the ocean, right near Indian Head. The pools have natural bubbling water from the waves hitting the rocks. It’s truly a beautiful sight! Be careful as you get into the water as the waves can knock you down easily. But these larger waves can sometimes bring in fish from the ocean.

A day trip to Fraser Island is a perfect way to relax, have an adventure and see some magnificent views. If one day isn’t enough, book a multi-day tour and stay on the island for 2 or 3 days.
