But where exactly is it?

The History of Fraser Island

Fraser island’s first name was ‘K’gari,’ which is an indigenous word which translates to paradise. The local aborginal comminity on Fraser Island was the Butchulla people, and have been residing on the island for more than 5,500 years. The name change to ‘Fraser’ came in 1836, after the arrival of Europeans. It was to honour the late Captain James Fraser, who endured a shipwreck along with his wife and crew. The Captain and crew surviving the crash by swimming ashore to the Island, coming face to face with the local indigenous community. Sadly, Captain Fraser never returned home, with two different stories of his death on the island. Eliza Fraser, who was the captain’s wife stated one of the retellings. Accusing the Aboriginal people in murdering her husband. While a surviving crew member stated otherwise, saying his death was from natural causes. His death is still a mystery, but the island is still known as Fraser Island to honour the lost captain.

How you can get to Fraser Island

The island sits just off the coast of Queensland’s coast, north of Brisbane. There are many ways to get to Fraser Island, but deciding which can be tricky, and can depend on where you are coming from. You will always have to take a ferry, departing from either Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. If you are in the mood for a quick journey, hop on a direct flight from either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. These all land at Hervey Bay, the Brisbane flight (which is the most popular,) takes around an hour. If you’re travelling from Brisbane, and you have a car, you can drive there yourself. Simply head out of town on the highway to Hervey Bay. Otherwise, we suggest taking a tour which will bus you from Brisbane to the ferry, and organising your tickets so you won’t have to wait in line.
