Dingoes are common around Fraser Island. And because there is a large quantity of dingoes, their prey lives everywhere all over the island.
They will often eat lean meats like kangaroos and other animals. They will hunt and feed on many wild animals on Fraser Island.
They are skilled and versatile hunters, and they aren’t fussy eaters! Their diet ranges, and they’ll feast on anything from pademelons to kangaroos.
Dingoes are often found in a whole range of different habitats. They are native to Australia, and are the country’s main canines.
They are an ancient animal, and have been recorded in Aboriginal documentation for many years. It is thought that dingoes are not fully native to Australia, but have descended from their Southeast Asian canine ancestors some 3500 years ago. Often, they will employ different hunting techniques to capture their food.
The Dingo Diet
Dingoes eat lots of protein and carbohydrates that are found on kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, possums – but they’ll even eat marine life. These rogue dogs have been known to capture things like dolphins or birds. They’ll both hunt alone and/or in packs, too. They will more so hunt in larger packs, but they might also hunt wild animals like pigs, kangaroos, or even birds and lizards.
You’ll often hear the dingoes on the island, as they howl in the same kind of way that wolves do.
Don’t feed the dingoes!
When you’re visiting Fraser Island, admire the dingoes from a distance – but try not to feed them! It’s also an offence to feed dingoes intentionally! Plus, if you feed them, they will only become more and more curious with what you might have to offer them. Dingoes are returning customers!
Don’t feed the dingoes on Fraser Island…feed the dolphins instead!
