How Did the Champagne Pools Get Their Name?

Champagne Pools

The Champagne Pools crash and splash against the rocks. They bubble and fizz, creating the illusion of champagne fizzing. There’s a big sandstone wall that encases the pools. The waves form a waterfall-like effect over the rocks and walls, and the residue of the waves slowly fizzles down, creating a champagne-like effect.

It’s a bit like nature’s jacuzzi! Swim around in a big glass of champagne. The sand banks are shallow, and there are small bubbles of water that foam on top of the pools – it looks like a glass of champagne.

Forceful surfs around the world’s largest sand island

Welcome to the world’s largest sand island! The sheer force of the ocean makes the water appear to have a ‘fizzy’ effect at high tides, especially. Normally, there is a rough surf around the K’gari shores, so it can be a bit like being in a washing machine to swim around in.

And sometimes there can be a few crocs or jellies lurking about in the Queensland waters, making it unsafe swimming territory.

Don’t worry though, you can still take a dip on K’gari – the Champagne Pools offers a little section of safe swimming. So float around in the water, soak up the beach vibes, and relax in paradise.

Snorkelling in the champagne pools

Because of the powerful waves, they’ll often carry little fish into the pools. So, when the tide is low, the fish get caught inside the pools for a little while, until the tide rises again and takes them out.

So, when you swim around the Champagne Pools at low tide, you’ll be able to spot a few colourful fish swimming around the pools! What’s better than pools that look like a glass of champagne? Pools that you can swim in!
