K’gari is the world’s largest sand island and is off the coast of Queensland.
K’gari (previous name, Fraser Island), is a famous and very large sand island in Australia. The island offers breathtaking views from the beautiful lakes and the coastal views.
The island is perfect for those who want to explore, relax on the sand and even swim in the different lakes.
By four wheel drive and ferry/barge
You can reach K’gari from either Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. There is a ferry that departs from these locations daily. You can drive to either one and get the ferry or barge from both as they are vehicle friendly. Though you can only bring a four wheel drive to K’gari, if you don’t have one you can hire one.
Hervey Bay is a two and a half hour drive from Sunshine Coast and Rainbow Beach is just under a two hour drive from Sunshine Coast.
Book a tour
Booking a tour to K’gari can be a great option if you’re on limited time or if you don’t have access to a four wheel drive. There are tours that leave from both Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach and take you to all the main highlights of K’gari.
Choose from a day tour or a two day tour of K’gari and experience the beautiful island off the coast of Queensland.
How to get around K’gari
You will need to either join a tour to explore parts of K’gari or drive around with a four wheel drive. You can only get around K’gari with a four wheel drive due to the island being sand, so other cars will have a lot of trouble.
Things to do in K’gari
The beautiful sand island has so much you can do and see. Whether you can be there for a day or two, it’s worth the visit!
Lake McKenzie
This lake is a beautiful crystal clear lake that is considered ‘perched’. A perched lake only contains rainwater, and the best part is there are no creatures in this lake and is perfect for swimming. The sand surrounding the lake has pure white which is so soft to walk along.
Maheno Shipwreck
The Maheno Shipwreck is one of the famous ships that was washed up on K’gari in 1935. You can see for yourself this giant ship that is now rusted up on 75 Mile Beach.
75 Mile Beach
Speaking of 75 Mile Beach, this is perhaps one of the most famous beaches. The beach spans about 120 kilometres, also known as 75 miles! You can drive along this long stretch of sand and look out to the gorgeous blue waters.
K’gari is best travelled by driving a four wheel drive or even on a guided tour! One day tours depart from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach daily.
