The History of Noosa

Australian Aboriginals had dwelled in Noosa for over 40,000 years before any Europeans arrived. The name ‘Noosa,’ came from the Aboriginal language meaning ‘shadows.’ This refers to the tall rainforest trees towering over the city, blocking out some natural light in the area. The first European arrival was in 1828, with different comings throughout the 19th century. It has developed from a small fishing town used for its beaches and lush bushland into a top tourism destination known throughout the world.

What to Do in Noosa

• Noosa National Park

  The National Park is one of Noosa’s most precious treasures. Complete with stunning landscapes of lush rainforests and unspoiled shores. Submerge yourself in this natural paradise as you trek along one of the many park trails. Journey to some incredible lookout points such as Boiling Pot, Dolphin Point, or Hell’s Gates.

  For a real risqué adventure, you can even travel to Alexandria Bay Beach, the park’s nudist beach. Arrive the third Sunday of each month and let it all hang out as you soak up the sun rays in the soft sand. Make sure to bring sunscreen for your extra exposed skin!

• Water Activities

  As Noosa’s backyard is the stunning ocean waters, there is the whole host of water activities available. Surf the crashing waves at the beaches dispersed throughout the area. If you aren’t a confident swimmer, simply splash around the shallow rock pools and discover the tiny creature living inside them. Fish the outer areas of the ocean and catch your dinner for the night. Or for a unique activity, try to stand up paddling. Cruise along the still waters of the area as you view the natural surroundings.

  If you need a break from the sand and sweat why not stroll down Hastings Street? This street is bursting with luxe boutiques, laid-back charm, as well as some delicious cafes and restaurants. Browse the shops and finish with a glass of wine at one of the open-air restaurants.

• Day trips out

  Once you’ve seen everything Noosa offers, trek out to the surrounding attractions! Hop on board the Noosa River Ferry, offering multiple stops along the way with a commentary about the history and culture of the area. For a jam-packed day, visit Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. It is a stunning location filled with swimming spots, lush greenery, enormous dunes, and soft sand beaches.
